The Australian Minister for Immigration (Mr Alex Downeri said today that a Chinese who claimed to have been smuggled into Australia in a box sight years ago. in fact was a seaman who deserted a ship in Brisbane two years ago.
The Chinese claimed he was Mak Kong, a refugee from Communist China and had entered Australia as a stowaway eight years ago. He was arrested by Immigration officers in Melbourne last Thursday Deportation proceedings are uQder way ‘My officers have been checking this story and today have proved conclusively that the man is Mak Chee, a deserter who left ship in Brisbane less than two years ago." Mr Downer said He added: “His statements to the press and statements o people who befriended him gave rise to the lampooning of my officers tor carrying out their duty to demonstrations outside the Melbourne office of my department by university students. to slanderous allegations of corruption in my department in a Melbourne TV interview and even the publication of a letter under the name of a university official seeking a commission of inquiry into the workings of mv department ” "Mr Downer said the case illustrated the folly of placing credence on the untested and fanciful tales which were put forward frequently by illegal immigrants to gain support of their false claims “Action will now proceed to have Mak Chee deported as a prohibited immigrant.” Mr Downer said In Melbourne today.
