EXPORTS TO BRITAIN
N.Z. Costs Are Out Of Line (N.Z. Press Association) HASTINGS. August 6 One of New Zealand's chief competitors in the sale of canned foods on the United Kingdom market, Australia, had an unfair advantage because the Australian Government was giving incentives to its exporters wh > also had the benefit of • depreciated currency. Mr J. Wattie. managing director of J. Wattie Cai - neries. Ltd., Hastings, said this today. Mr Wattie has just completed a two and s half months business tout overseas. He said the prospects of New Zealand canned goods on the British market were satisfactorybut an obstacle was prtgg. “I think that applies to everything New Zealand has to sell. Our costs are. out of line with what world markets are prepared to pay and that is why We are having difficulty with overseas funds. “If New Zealand exporters were treated in the same way .as Australian exporters our trade -with the United Kingdom would show tremendous development.” At present. New Zealand was being undersold, not because of lack of efficiency or ability, but simply by the incentives handed to our competitors by the Australian Government.
