f.V-Z. Press Association—Copyright) MEXICO CITY. August 6.
The United States Dans Cup team was sad today but had not given up hope after the jolting doubles defeat which gave Mexico a 2-1 lead yesterday in the Davis Cup American Zone matches.
Mexico took the 2-1 lead when R. Osuna and A. Palafox defeated C. McKinley and D. Ralston 8-6. 10-12, 3-6. 6-3. 6-2 On Saturday both countries won a singles match. The Mexicans moved to within one singles victory of clinching the series and the right to meet Jugoslavia in the finals of the American Zone competition in a gruel--1 ng match that was held up more than two hours by rain. Mexico can take the semifinal series by winning either of today’s two singles matches. Osuna will face J. Douglas, of California, in the first match while McKinley
opposed Palafox in the second match.
“Jon Douglas has beaten Osuna in friendly matches on the west coast.” the American team captain, R. Kelleher said. “I don’t think anything is impossible. He may do it again." But the Associated Press said Osuna is favoured to clinch the series for Mexico in the first match. McKinley beat Osuna in Saturday’s opening singles but Palafox defeated Douglas. “I think Osuna can beat Douglas on any court, on any surface, and under any conditions anywhere in the world.” said Mexico's - captain, P. Contreras. “Naturally. I think we will win now.” If Mexico does win it will be the first time America has lost an American Zone Davis Cup round.
