LOW-COST BEDS
Investigation Near Chateau (N.Z. Press Association) WANGANUI. August 6. The Tongariro National Park Board has given approval for investigations into providing low-cost accommodation for 500 persons in the Chateau area. It will ask its planners to find a suitable area in the Chateau vicinity where the accommodation can be built, and private firms wild be allowed to undertake the projects. The board envisages low-cost units housing from 30 to 100 persons. This morning’s decision comes after yesterday’s advice to the board from the Tourist Hotel Corporation that the corporation does not plan to build cheap accommodation. and that it would not oppose private firms undertaking this. The board already has one application from an Auckland firm which is interested in providing accommodation in the Chateau area Yesterday’s meeting also asked its planners to investigate siting a bus park big enough for up to 100 buses, just below the Chateau golf course. The planners will also be asked to investigate a site east of the Chateau for single staff quarters for organisations operating in the park, and the expansion of the Whakapapa motor camp to provide accommodation for married couples.
