Canada Goose Drive

Sir,—Viewing from a grandstand seat. I was filled with disgust that the Minister and officers of the Wild Life Division could sanction the disgraceful display witnessed at Lake Ellesmere on Sunday. What the Acclimatisation Society may do no longer surprises me. Canada geese are heavy birds which cannot remain in the air for long. Yet. terrified by the aeroplanes, they were rounded up and driven in some cases 12 to 15 miles until they came down on to the water exhausted. Some did manage to rise when chased by power boats. to be rounded-up again by aeroplanes. Others could not do so. Public opinion is overwhelmingly against this quite unnecessary cruelty and any attempt to repeat it (as is suggested in "The Press" report this morning) will have serious, consequences for the member for the district (Mr McAlpine) who should 'not allow his constituents to be offended by a colleague’s decision—Yours. etc.. HONKER Leeston, August 6, 1982.

Sir.—Surely God brooded over Lake Ellesmere yesterday. How pleased I was to hear the rain and see the low clouds. From before daylight until after 8 o'clock there was a continual roar of can

passing my house, also an enormous truck to carry away the spoil, which they did not get. What a Godless country this is becoming. How many have any respect for the Sabbath? As to the slaughter of these lovely birds, fancy three planes and six boats. There was no need for the attempted massacre. Anyone annoyed by Canada geese has only to go out with a gun and * fire at fhem and they soon fly away. Another way is to smash their eggs in the Chathams. While writing I have heard a goose honk. Long may they honk!—Yours, etc.. MORE AND MORE. August 6, 1962.
