Boxing T. SCANLAN DEFEATED
Seconds Throw In Towel (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. August 6 The New Zealand middleweight champion. T. Scanlan, was beaten on a technical knock-out in the sixth round of a scheduled 12-round bout by N. Jones (Australia) at the Auckland YMCA tonight. In the fourth round Seanlan broke his left hand on Jones's head At the end of the fifth, it was evident that Scanlan was in serious difficulties. and his seconds threw a towel into the ring at the start of th® sixth round. The referee. Mr E C. Axmishaw, ordered the fight to continue, and the towel was removed. The seconds pointed to Scanlan's damaged hand as Scanlan attempted to box with one hand The boxers mauled around the ring, and Scanlan went down for a count of eight After he rose Mr Armiahaw stopped the contest “So far as I could judge Scanlan was fit to continue." said the referee. “No-one took the trouble to acquaint me with the possibility that his hand was too badly damaged for him to continue."
Tongan Yacht Not Found (N Z P A.-Reuter—Copyright) NUKUALOFA. Aug 6 There was no news today of the 45ft Tongan yacht Tuaikaepau. overdue on a fishing voyage from Tonga to Auckland, with 17 persons believed on board. A New Zealand Air Force Sunderland aircraft today flew over the area near Ata Island in the Tonga group where the master o’ the yacht had planned to fish en route, but reported no sign of the vessel. Ata is the southern-most island in the Tongas and isolated and uninhabited The Tuaikaepau was reported overdue at Auckland on July 30.
