New Station For Lyttelton

Aug 6 Lyttelton is to have a I new railway station The Minister of Railways (Mr McAlpinei said today that the Cabinet had approved a scheme for the improvement of the railway offices at Lyttelton. “The present -tation and railway goods offices were built as long ago as 1873 and are badly tn need of replacement.” he said. A new station building of about 2000 sq ft. and Of modern, attractive design
would be erected to cater for the needs of passengers and parcels traffic Mr McAlpine said the new building would be about 95 feet ’long by 21. feet wide and would provide comfortable facilities for passengers and other customers of the department Purchase of tickets and other transactions, for example would take place across an open counter 7f' 6in long instead of through •he traditional “hole in the wall " Office accommodation for the stationmaster, the railway port superintendent, th* goods supervisor, and their
respective staffs, would be provided m the two-storey brick and concrete building that formerly housed the Lyt’elton Harbour Beard offices The building located on railway land, had been acquired by the Railways Department It could be readily renovated and adapted for use as railway offices
"I am sure.” said the Minister. "that users of the ancient Lyttelton station wilt welcome the news that it is to be replaced by up-to-date premises
"It is a further step in the progressive modernisation of railway buildings and equip ment.”
