PLACE NAMES CHANGED

Jacksons Bav Loses “s” Jacksons Bay, South Westland, will be known as Jackson Bay unless the New Zealand Geographic Board receives any objection to the proposed change. This is one of the changes of place names notified in the latest Gazette. New place names fixed in the Canterbury land district are: Amherst glacier, on the eastern slopes of Mount Petermann, a tributary of the Godley glacier; Cockayne glacier, a tributary of the j Lyell glacier; Hikurangi Bay, Akaroa, instead of Ikirangi and Hikuraki; Lawrence glacier, at the head of the Lawrence river; McCoy glacier, at the head of the McCoy stream; Okuti river, instead of Okute. Akaroa district; Prelude peak, east of Kirk stream in the Lyell Vai-, ley, Rakaia headwaters; Stewart glacier, at the head of Unknown stream, instead of Steward glacier. On the West Coast, the board has named the glacier leading from the Garden of Eden ice plateau and draining into Perth river the Abel glacier. Adams glacier is the name given to the glacier draining into the Adams river and Beelzebub glacier the glacier leading from the east side of Adams glacier into the Lambert glacier. Cain glacier also drains into the Perth river about a mile east of the Abel glacier outflow.

In the same district, the board has given the name Eve icefall to the fall leading from the Garden of Eden ice plateau into the Perth glacier, and the large icefield between the headwaters of the Perth and Adams river is called the Garden of Eden ice plateau. The ridge running northwest from Elie de Beaumont now called Burton range becomes Burton ridge: and Drummond ridge is the name for the ridge running north from near Drummond peak to the Spencer-Callery junction. A twin-headed peak at the junction of the Tatare range. Gunn ridge and Maximillian range is called Junction peak, and 1 the Tatare ridge becomes Tatare range. The name of the Karoro railway station in the Greymouth borough has been changed to Wharemoa, as the station does not serve the Karoro locality.
