Now in its second year of undergraduate and postgraduate instruction, it seeks to appoint a second Professor in the Department of Mathematics in order to ensure that a modern approach to studies tn Pure Mathematics can be carried through the full range of courses. A special interest in algebra or topology is particularly desirable. On the appointment of Professor of Pure Mathematics the present Professor of Mathematics. Professor K. C. Westfold, will assume the title of Professor of Applied Mathematics. Excellent library facilities are being built up and a Sirius Computer. • around which a Computing Centre is to be established. is already on the University campus. In recent years there has been a considerable upsurge of activity among the professional mathematicians of Australia under the auspices of the Australian Mathematical Society. Annual meetings of the society are he'd at different centres as well as an Annual Summer Research Institute. Study leave is normally granted by the Council on the basis of one year's leave of absence in seven, or in shorter periods on a pro rata basis for study overseas. BURKE, Bursar. 3251 THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF ADVANCED STUDIES RESEARCH SCHOOL OF PACIFIC STUDIES APPLICATIONS are Invited for a number of appointments in trie grades of Senior Research Fellow and Research Fellow in the Department of Econbmlcs of the Research School of Pacific Studies The Department's interest Is in the study of underdeveloped areas; it offers scope for research in the field, as well as theoretical work In the economics of development and emphasises the building up of systematic empirical knowledge of the Pacific and Southeast Asia. Studies in current problems of economic growth and of Australia’s economic relations with the region are also being undertaken. A particular field of study of several Departments of the School Is the development of New Guinea. These posts will be of particular interest to research workers wishing to undertake field work in South or East Asia or the Pacific Region. Generous provision. is made for such field work, which is encouraged where it forms an integral part of a Fellow’s approved research programme. The salary ranges for Senior Research Fellows and Research Fellows are £A2620-3160 and EA1656-2450 per annum respectively. Appointment is made within one of these ranges, according to qualifications, for a period of three years, with possible extension to the maximum of five years. Superannuation is on the F.S.S.U. pattern. Reasonable travel expenses are paid and assistance with accommodation is provided.
