ENGLISHWOMAN IN POLICE
Prize Gained On Graduation (N Z. Press Assocsatton) WELLINGTON. Aug. 2. There was a very happy young English lass at the police passing out ceremony at Trentham today. The girl. Valerie Chandler, had just graduated as a policewoman in the New Zealand Police Force. She was tlie only woman in the graduating class— Class No. 20. Adding to her excitement was a prize she had gained above al] her male classmates. first in theory and practice of first aid. Miss Chandler came to NewZealand as a tourist, but after being here only three weeks decided to stay and applied to join the police. In England she had been a school teacher and had two years and a half with the London Metropolitan Police in Chelsea. “Why had she decided to become a policewoman?” “Because I liked tlie idea of being on the right side of the law. Also, you don’t know what will happen next." she replied. She has been posted to the Auckland Central Police Station. Other prize winners were: —Minister's prize for top marks. A. E. Terry, Rotorua; second prize, J. Kenny. Christchurch; Meltzer prize for weapon training, E. J Peters. Upper Hutt; staff prize for sportsmanship, D. C. King. Mangawhai.
