PETITION BY PATIENT

Detention In Mental Home (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Aug. 3. Substantial compensation for alleged wrongful detention in Avondale Mental Hospital from 1949 to 1957 is sought by Oliver Alfred Smith, formerly Schmidt, in a petition presented by Mr N. J. King (Opposition, Walternate) in the House of Representatives today. The petitioner said that when he was committed, and during the time he was there, he was sa.ne and wrongfully detained against his will. He said officials and doctors had refused to divulge to him any information about his state of mental health, claiming they were prevented from doing so by law.
