March On Police After Racial Strife
(5.Z Htess AssociaUun—Copyngntt LONDON, August 2. An angry mob clashed with police in Dudlev, Worcestershire, last night, in the town’s third night of racial disturbances, ending With a march on |>olice headquarters, the ’’Daily Express” reported.
The newspaper said the trouble began at about 11 p m., when a crowd of nearly 200 threatened to move into areas where West Indians live. As the mob gathered, a young motor-cyclist roared down a street and threw a brick through the window of a house where 12 Jamaicans were gathered. One of the Jamaicans was injured, and the others were prepared to face the white crowd when police reinforcements arrived. They ordered the Jamaicans back into the house and broke up the crowd, using police dogs on leashes. Most of the crowd formed
again and began to march on the Dudley police headquarters. Constables blocked the way into the station when the crowd arrived and the crowd hesitated long enough for patrolling police to rush to the station to break them up ‘The Tinies” said 11 persons had been arrested by midnight On Tuesday. Dudley magistrates imprisoned 10 men who were arrested during racial fighting on Monday night, said the "Daily Express" Yesterday five' more men were gaoled. The town’s racial strife started a: the week-end. after a fight between a white man and a West Indian.
