Tria! Run The inter-island rail-car ferry, Aramoana, made a trial run from Wellington to Picton yesterday to test the Picton terminal berthage facilities and link span equipment. The ship fitted perfectly into her special berth. No major modifications are required at the Picton end. The vessel sailed for Wellington in midafternoon. The Aramoana will return to Picton on Saturday. August 11, for the' official opening service.—(P.S.S.) Passing The Buck The Nottingham Magistrates Court was told yesterday that a 31-year-old man who has quit nine jobs since 1956 had this to say to National Assistance officials: “If some stupid person has to go and invent work, I can’t see why I should suffer. Let those who invented it do it” Dennis Fleet was fined £5 on two counts of persistently neglecting to maintain himself. said the “Daily Sketch.” —London, August 2. 84tli Birthday In the best of health and spirits, a famous former All Black, Mr W. J. Wallace, celebrated his 84th birthday today at his Wellington home yesterday. He was the recipient of numerous messages of congratulations and best wishes. Mr and Mrs Wallace celebrated their golden wedding last year. Mrs Wallace also enjoys the best of health. “I’m slowing up a bit, not reaching the goal line quite as fast as I used to," Mr Wallace said yesterday. “But I’ll have to put a spurt on now to acknowledge all these birthday greetings.” Mr Wallace was an All Black in 1903, 1904, 1905-6, 1.907 and 1908.—(P.A.) No Judges No respecter of persons, influenza confined both of Christchurch's residential judges to bed yesterday, effectively bringing the Supreme Court to a standstill. Mr Justice Macarthur has been ill for a week, and yesterday Mr Justice Richmond was too iL to continue with the criminal jury trial set down for hearing. Jurors were sent home until Monday, but Mr Justice Macarthur is expected to be well enough to sentence convicted persons today. Artistic Captain A shipmaster who spends his spare time painting, sketching and drawing is Captain G. S. Sheldon, of the Shaw Savill and Albion express cargo liner, Alaric, which has been visiting Lyttelton. A married man with four children, the 44-year-old Captain Sheldon has been interested in painting since he was 21. Portraits are his favourite works, and some of his paintings are hung in his cabin, including a striking portrait of a young girl he painted aboard a passenger vessel some years ago Much of his work has been given to friends and so far, he said, he had not thought seriously of having anything hung publicly. Whiskers There may be several rather unkempt faces at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National meeting at Riccarton tomorrow. If the owners of the faces are wearing badges saying, “Pardon my scruffy appearance” they will Undoubtedly be some of the Queenstown beard-growers expected to attend the meeting. About 150 residents of Queenstown are growing beards, as part of the Wakatipu district centennial celebrations. Personal Items Sir Charles Norwood, a former Mayor of Wellington, is in St. Vincent Hospital, Sydney, suffering from acute bronchitis. He left Auckland last Friday in the Mariposa He was admitted to hospital on Monday. Mr Thorkild WegenerClausen, charge d'affaires for Denmark in New Zealand, who is at present spending a period of leave in Denmark, accompanied by Mrs Wegener-Clausen, will not now return to New Zealand. Mr Wegener-Clausen has been appointed Danish representative in Hamburg and will go there at the end of his leave.—(P.A.)
