Squash Rackets S.I. TITLES TODAY
N.Z. Champion Competing The last and most important event of the Christchurch squash rackets tournament season, the South Island championships, which begin tonight, will mark the only appearance here this season of the New Zealand champion, C. Waugh, of Palmerston North. At Timaru when he easily won tlie South Canterbury title earlier in the season, Waugh produced superb court covering and retrieving ability, and a greater shot-making repertoire. If the hard-hitting G. L. Bird (Timaru) justifies his second seeding and meets Waugh in the final, the stage will be set for a spectacular contest. It is unfortunate that I. Easton (Hamilton), ranked second in New Zealand, and the holder of the title, will not be defending for he is the one player who has achieved any recent. success against Waugh. But Bird at his best, has the power and the shots to force the champion to the limit. Other absentees include the leading Christchurch players. D. J. Triggs and R. G. Pattinson. but good entries have been received from Palmerston North, Masterton..Christchurch. Timaru, Oamaru, and Invercargill. K. R. Green and F. N. Coe follow Waugh and Bird in the championship seedings, and the B grade seedings are R. Goodall (Invercargill). R. A. Latham and M. O. Holdsworth (Christchurch), and T. Henshal (Invercargill).
