Winter Cup Candidates Shape Well In Training

Fast times were out of the question and distance gallops were the exception rather than the rule for the training at Riccarton yesterday. Galloping took place 45ft out on the course proper which began to chop out fairly badly as the morning's work progressed.

Toureg, Top Rank. ShangriLa and Omaha were Winter Cup candidates to show good speed and handle the conditions well while the same applied to Far Step, a Paparua Handicap light-weight Among the lesser-lights none made a better impression than the northern visitors Toorak and Sundeed They showed speed which was not much worse than the best and a good deal better than many of the open horses. Top Rank (A. J. Stokes) gave Toureg IA C. Messervy) and Far Step (R W. Taylor) a couple of lengths start from the half-mile but was upsides with his companions at the end of the gallop, smartly run In 53sec. It was a sound effort for by the time they worked the track was starting to show signs of wear. Shangri-La. which worked about the same time, has obviously taken no harm from her race last Saturday for she was again outstanding. M. J. Wildermoth let her bowl along and in her usual effortless style she left half a mile behind In 52sec. None went faster over the distance during the morning. Omaha (A. J. Stokes) took .52 3-ssec for her half-mile but she was one of the earlier

worker! and callopinf conditions were at their best then Others to show good speed and adaptability tn the going were Tarlon, Prince Filou.
