Church Music Group

The University Church Music Group, conducted by Mr Norman Hindley. sang the “Missa Da Pacem” by Josquin des Pres, a fifteenthcentury Flemish composer, in the University Hall yesterday afternoon. The music was elaborate and of highly complex contrapuntal texture as charming in its effect as It is erudite in the writing. The work is based upon a plain chant theme which was stylishly sung before the recital began. There is a soul-refreshing peacefulness in the liturgical music of this period when it is performed with the care and finesse which this small choir gave it. The setting of the University Hall was very suitable, and, although the music is functional rather than belonging to the concert stage, it was movingly beauti. ful and devotional. Mr Hindley has achieved an excellent balance in the choir, and the voices blended most effectively with highly pleasing quality of tone which had both freshness and flexibility. The rhythm, though disciplined, had freedom and clear definition and direction. The standard of Intonation was very good indeed. and all concerned deserve congratulation* on the stylish finish in performance. —C.F.B.
