ALTERATION TO RAILWAY
Reconsideration By Minister “It appears that all is not yet lost: the matter is to be reopened.” Mr A. L. Burk, the secretary-manager, reported to the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday on negotiations for rail access to the eastern harbour extension. The works committee reported that rail access to the extension had been sought to free Gladstone Pier for the erection of transit sheds. The Minister of Railways (Mr McAlpine) had replied that the proposal was impracticable. because of the cost. He had been asked to review his decision. Mr Burk said he had met the General Manager of Railways (Mr A. T. Gandell) in Wellington. The Minister had now replied that he had asked his departmental officers for a further report on an alternative rail lay-out.
To Mr W. P. Glue. the chairman (Mr A. AMlacfarlane) said he thought the proposal involved the removal of the Shaw, Savil! store.
