MORE “BRASS HATS”
War Office Report (Special Crspdt. N.ZP.A.) LONDON. July 31. The number of “brass hats” at the War Office has gone up in the last two years while the size of the Army has gone down. There are now at the War Office 297 senior officers, from lieutenant-colonels to generals. One hi four comes under the “brass hat” category. The War Office now employs 1991 persons but in the last two years a cut in its staff of 578 military and civilians produced a rise in the wages bill of £283,581 The reason was that out of the 437 civilian staff dismissed. 430 were in the clerical and typing grades. Quoting these fac’.s and figures a report issued by M.P.’s who are members of the All Party Estimates Committee, recommends a committee of inquiry should be set up to make a close study of War Office organisation in every respect. It says there are too many senior officers in the War Office and that more civilians should be employed. partdcularly in administration as opposed to policy making.
