FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—A disturbed north-westerly airstream covers the Tasman Sea and New Zealand and cold fronts are moving eastwards over the South Island and across the Tasman Sea east of Tasmania. Forecast:— Canterbury and the Kaikoura Coast.—Moderate variable winds, northerlies predominating; partly cloudy with rain in the Alps and a few scattered light falls elsewhere; cool temperatures. Outlook: mainly fair. Central Marlborough and the Sounds.—Fresh to strong north-west winds, gale force in exposed places near Cook Strait; overcast with showers in the morning and again in the evening, otherwise mainly fair; moderate temperatures. Outlook: partly cloudy with a few showers chiefly about the western ranges. Nelson.—Moderate to fresh north-west winds; cloudy to overcast with persistent showers about the ranges and occasional light showers elsewhere; moderate temperatures. Outlook: light showers chiefly about the ranges. Buller and Westland.—Moderate to fresh northerly winds: mainly overcast with persistent rain, heavy at times, w-th some thunderstorms likely; cool temperatures. Outlook: unsettled and showery.
