244 KILLED ON ROADS
Seven Months’ Toll CN.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Aug. 1. The 1962 road toll reached 244 last night—2o more than for the first seven months of 1961. Pedestrian deaths, however, dropped by 11 to 51 for the same period. Twenty-seven people were killed on New Zealand roads last month—the lowest monthly total this year and the lowest July figure since 1956. Announcing the figures, the Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine) said tonight lhat it was impossible to determine the saving in pedestrian deaths due to the current pedestrian safety campaign. He warned that climatic conditions this month would still expose pedestrians to winder hazards. “Last August, drivers and their passengers headed the casualty list. Nineteen were killed and more than 570 injured.” Inattention, failure to give way and failing to keep left were principally responsible for the casualties. But no traffic accident
could be attributed solely to the weather, Mr McAlpine said. Drivers must adapt themselves to any conditions
