DISTRIBUTION OF FLOUR
Evidence To Wheat Inquiry
A distributing organisation, similar to the organisation that preceded the Wheat Committee, would be formed by millers if all controls were lifted, Mr R. D. Evmm, chairman of the New Zealand FHounnUlens’ Society, Mid in evidence in support of his society’s submissions to the Committee of Inquiry into the Wtoewt, Flour, and Bread Industries yesterday.
With the emoeption of one or two mills, the distributing organisation would become Dominion-wide, he said to Mr A C. Perry, counsel for the society. Mr Evans described the quota system as an unqualified success. “It has a lot of advantages, in my opinion—and I know the opinion of all millers,” he said. Advantages included reducing distribution costs and eliminating bad debts to millers. The system also enabled millers to buy with confidence, because they knew how much flour they would sell; and it facilitated the borrowing of money from banks.
Research On Wheat Bug Damage An assurance that the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research was working on bug damage to wheat was given to the Committee of Inquiry into the Wheat, Flour, and Bread Industries yesterday by Mr E. W. Hullett, director of the Wheat Research Institute. To Mr W. C. Stafford, a member of the committee, he said that the bug was hard to deal with because the damage was usually found only after harvest. It appeared to feed on wheat only when other foods were scarce, and for that reason there was no pattern.
