TAUPO, July 18.
Before dawn tomorrow 30 police officers and 20 officers and men of the Royal New Zealand Army Corps will make a sweep from Mokai toward the western shores of Lake Taupo in an effort to recapture the prison escaper, George Wilder. Army reinforcements to an eight-man signal unit, which has been maintaining radio communication for the last six days of the search in the Lake Taupo area, arrived at Mokai this evening. Chief Inspector F. O. Scott, in charge of the search, said the last indication of Wilder in the area was the discovery this morning of a broken window in a bach at Kawakawa The window was known to have been replaced the day before. “We believe Wilder to be in dire straits as far as food supplies are concerned,” said Mr Scott. “The last indication that he obtained food was an overturned beehive and missing honey combs near the Waihora stream yesterday.’’ The combined Army-police search will cover farming and scrub country from Mokai down to Waihora. Kawakawa, and Whangamata Bays.
An aircraft and a launch will probably be used in the attempt to force Wilder out of hiding.
