N.Z.-MADE TRAINERS

A New Zealand manufacturer of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation trainers said yesterday he was "staggered" that anyone should want to import this equipment. The manufacturer. Mr M Cheshire, of Max Cheshire. Ltd., said there was no justification for the application by the Auckland centre of the St. John Ambulance Association, to import the dolls from Norway. With thousands of school children

to be taught resuscitation, dolls at £3O a time were impracticable.

The Christchurch - made trainer is for use on a live model. It has a mask, gravity valve, tube, and plastic lungs in a rubber covering. A spare mask is supplied to allow sterilising a d demonstrations to go together. After use the plastic lungs are replaced. It costs £4 18s 6d Mr Cheshire said the trainer was used in numerous schools in New Zealand It had been approved by the Royal Life-saving Society and the Water Safety Council.

The trainers were made under licence in England and the United States, and were .exported from New Zealand to Australia, the Pacific islands, and as far as Trinidad. he said They had been adopted by the St. John Ambulance Association in Britain and the London Metrooolitan Police, and by the Swiss Red Cross.

The trainer was designed and made in Christchurch in conjunction with safety organisations, and Dr. F A de Hamel, of the Health Department. Mr Cheshire said
