MARKING OF PAPERS

Surprise Move By Dept. (N.Z Press Association) WELLINGTON. July 16. The Education Department has begun advertising for qualified people to mark School Certificate examination papers this year. The surprise move was announced today by the Minister >f Education (Mr Tennent) after a threat by postprimary teachers not to mark the papers. The teachers want higher marking fees. The posts will be widely advertised several days this week. Marking is normally completed during the last week in November and the first two or three weeks in December, Mr Tennent said. Each marker is usually allocated 350 to 400 three-hour scripts or 500 to 600 two-hour scripts. But this may be varied to suit the marker's circumstances. Rates of payment are 5s for a three-hour script and 3s 9d for a two-hour script.
