Hely Has 100th Win Over Fences

(From Our Own Reporter)

WELLINGTON, July 11.

The Cambridge horseman, J. H. Hely, had to bring all his skill and vigour into play to land Peterzami a winner in the Corunna Hurdles. Hely gained special pleasure and earned warm plaudits for this win, which was his hundredth success in jumping races.

Nafanua put up a plucky battle for a time when challenged after landing over the last fence, but Hely shaded B. Waerea for vigour, and Peterzami drew out fairly quickly to a lead of two and a half lengths in the last few strides. Peterzami narrowly won the corresponding race on the first day of the meeting. Long-range plans for thia four-year-old Alpheus gelding are for a cross-country campaign next winter. The Te Rapa trainer, H. Long, has high hopes for the grey. Nafanua, which had been responsible for all the pace, was unchallenged for second. He finished five lengths clear of the favourite Davett, » plodding third. Edrenbell was next clear of a well-beaten lot. Polo Star fell at the first hurdle, and Summer Day came down heavily at the second. Shakes was within inches of a victory for the South Island in the Juvenile Handicap. He was the fastest finisher of all, but failed by a nose to beat the Takaniniowned and trained Mali Peter. SHAKES JUST MISSES Shakes, a Piotavia gelding from Riccarton owned by Mr A. R. Bussell, and trained by G. H. Murfitt, jun., missed victory by a nose in the Juvenile Handicap. Shakes started 19 wide, and the winner. Mali Peter, started from 20 but both had the pace to run close to the lead all the way. Mali Peter was never able to work over closer to the inside rail, but Shakes found a gap between tiring horses outside the furlong, and challenged on Mali Peter's left. His resolute late challenge would have brought him out on top in another stride. Golden Spray, one of the leaders at the half-way mark tired from outside the furlong and was in a gap of five lengths third, Killeymoon, another fading

runner over the last bit, was in a smaller gap, fourth, just beating Voltaire. Red Mania, the each-way favourite, was in the front line at the three furlongs, then tired to finish twelfth. BATTLING FINISH Arawana and Blue Rock battled out a spectacular finish to the Lambton Hurdles —a finish that showed the skill of their respective riders B. J. Langford and J. H. Hely to the, best advantage. Only a nose, in Arawana’s favour, separated these horses at the end of - a mile and three-quarters. It was a race notable for quick changes of fortune in the last five furlongs. At that distance Splice was going well in front. A little later Lord Oman was contending for the lead. Then Cretan made a bid and gained the lead going to the last fence. Then he faded, unable to pull out anything extra when Arawana and Blue Rock challenged simultaneously. Cretan finished third in a gap of three and a half lengths and three lengths clear of Splice. Lord Oman was a disappointing fifth. Triple Count was sixth and Fly Home did well to finish seventh after being nearly out of the race at. the five furlongs. Fly Home made a bad jump there, and the bit went through his mouth, presenting problems for K. A. Old in stopping him after they passed the post. Collector also put himself out of the race with a bad jump at the five furlongs. GERSHWIN BY NOSE Gershwin won the Seatoun Handicap in a battling nose and head finish with Red Shadow and Miss Halo, a struggle that had mounted froln the furlong, where the three principals were well away from the others. This confirmed impressions that a wide barrier draw could have cost Gershwin a win on the first day, when he ran sixth. Gershwin did not get the best of runs today either, and had to go four wide from well back. He came to the front going to the furlong but was then hotly challenged first by Red Shadow and then by Miss Halo. Gershwin only just lasted for this, his third win this season. Return Fare was two

lengths back fourth and Emsie made ground for fifth. Mr Blue was a disappointing favourite. He tired to seventh. SYBEAU TOO GOOD Sybeau, an unlucky fourth on the first day of the meeting, made amends at Trentham today when he scored an easy win in the Petone Handicap. The Jekyll gelding was one of the well-performed hacks at the Auckland winter meeting. A placing there which brought him a good deal of prominence was a second to Lucky Lu. Today he was a firm favourite and he never gave his supporters any cause for alarm. He started well and quickly took a good position behind the pacemakers. He followed King's Fun, Rapanui and Copper Fair into the straight and had the opposition covered at the furlong. When shaken up he ran away to win by three and a half lengths from Gay Minga with two and a quarter lengths to Obrana. Harlech was fourth ahead of Lady Moy, Crown Prince, Palisade, Lametta and King’s Fun, Picket and Tremble were near the rear at the end. Methuselah failed to leave the stalls and took no part.
