HEIGHT OF EXPLOSION
1100 m Estimate Discounted
The theory that the American high altitude bomb exploded 1400 miles above the earth’s surface, made by Dr M. Gadsden, of the D.S.I.R station at Lauder, Central Otago, is discounted by Mr C. S. L. Keay. of the University of Canterbury physics department. Asked to comment he said “A Thor missile without a payload would be struggling to get above 1200 miles. Witn a (negation warhead its maximum altitude would not exceed 850 miles. These estimates are based on knowledge that the horizontal range of a Thor missile with a hydrogen bomb warhead is about 1700 miles “The flight time of 13 minutes in this case is probably due to the missile being fired in a high curving arc. possibly up to 400 miles, witn the explosion 200 miles on the downward path.”
