STRIKE AT WORKS
250 Out At Alliance
(N.Z. Press, Association)
INVERCARGILL, July 10 The Alliance Freezing Company’s Lorneville works came to a halt today as the 250 men still employed there voted to strike
The action was taken in sympathy with men in the boning room who have been in dispute with the management for almost two weeks The decision to strike came as a surprise to a big number of union members Many are reported to be annoyed at the result of the secret ballot, especially married men with children who cannot afford to be out of work.
Labour Department officials are trying to arrange a settlement, but the matter is dead-locked. The district officer of the Labour Department. Mr A J. Peterson, declined to comment on the dispute
The dispute began when four men. who had been given temporary employment in the boning room, were given notice and were told that eight other men would take their place Unionists considered the dismissals and replacement of the four men to be unjust and the boning room was declared "black”
About 1500 lambs a day and some cattle were being killed at the works.
