“Sorry, Wrong Number”
(New Zealand Press Association)
NEW PLYMOUTH. July 10. Curious things happen on the telephone. A woman at Perth dialled the wrong number and got a New Plymouth radio announcer out of bed today. Miss M. I. Koea answered the telephone when ft rang in her New Plymouth home soon after 1 am. A woman's voice, loud and clear, asked if that was Wellington. Miss Koea assured her it was New Plymouth—not Wellington. The voice replied: “This to Perth here. I want Wellington." Mutual greetings were exchanged. Miss Koea returned to bed and the Perth operator tried dialling for Wellington again. The call came through to New Zealand on the new trans-Tasman communications cable. The Post Office explained today that it is now pos-
sible for operators in telephone exchanges In the main Australian ciUes to dial direct through to a New Zealand number.
Operators dial a code number to put them through to New Zealand, then another number for the centre they require and then the individual number.
From New Zealand however, calls are put through an overseas exchange at Auckland.
