'T'AKING second place in the 1 gruelling 12.3 mile Holloway Memorial harrier race, the Canterbury champion, J. K. Macdonald, gave an outstanding performance on a limited programmme of training. Although unable to match the winner, B. Curie, over the second half of the distance, Macdonald acquitted himself very well, for he had had only seven weeks’ training, and it seems that with almost another month to the Can-
terbury championships he will offer strong resistance to challengers for the title. Macdonald is one of the many runners showing interest in the September marathon arranged by the Canterbury Road Runners’ Association as a final Empire Games trial. Provided his training continues to progress satisfactorily, Macdonald is likely to be a strong contender in the event, for in a recent try-out over the Canterbury championship course he returned 2hr 24m in
