AUSTRALIAN PURCHASE

Before Could Be Bargain "The Press” Special Service MATAMATA. July 9. A Melbourne bloodstock agent, Mr M. Marshall, came to New Zealand a week ago to see a yearling he bought privately some time ago and whose soundness is in dispute. While in the Dominion he looked for a horse "good enough to run up-country from Melbourne for an old friend." Before the races at Avondale on Saturday he agreed to buy Before at a reasonable price. The gelding was to run in the mile Waltemata Handicap. Although his part-owner and trainer, Mr W. Sanders, does not consider Before really suited by bad ground -the Balloch gelding spreadeagled the field to win by four lengths. Mr Marshall said afterwards: “It looks as If he might be better than an up-eountry runner.” Before looks as big a bargain as the Australians have picked since Black Hawk was purchased cheaply.
