D. B. Clarke Threatened
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, July 8. The great Rugby goal kicker, D. B. Clarke, was applauded today when he failed with one of the easiest of kicks, which resulted in the Barbarians and Harlequins playing a draw, 27 points each, in a charity match at Eden Park, Auckland. The kick was taken from only 15 or 20 yards from the goal. It was a calm, breathless afternoon and Clarke throughout the match had been kicking well enough for Harlequins to kick this one with ease.
But the captain of the Barbarians. P. F. Jones.
called: “ 'Camel,' if you kick this goal you won’t be fishing with me at Christmas. Clarke produced the most elaborate foozle, everybody laughed, the grandstand offered him a pleasant tribute and the match ended a minute or two later. It was much too good a game and much too much fun for the 25.0 M spectators as well as for the players, for either team to want to, or to need to win it. There was a profit of at least £2OOO for the Auckland Rugby Union's injured plaven’ fund.
