CRICKET England’s Big Test Win Gains Series
(NJZ.PJt. -Reuter— Copyright) LEEDS, July 8. England clinched the rubber 3-0 by beating Pakistan by an innings and 117 runs at Headingley yesterday. England proved its all-round superiority by winning with two days to spare for the second time in the series.
i-uKisvuii cut a suny uguru in both innings on an easypaced pitch too slow to give bowlers much help, and lost 17 wickets for 238 runs In just under six hours. Resuming at 73 for 3 in reply to England’s 428, Pakistan lost its remaining seven first innings wickets for 58 in 90 minutes, and following on 297 behind, was dismissed for 180 in 4hr lOmin. Apart from a fourth wicket stand of 73 in 100 minutes between Alim-Ud-Din (60) and Saeed Ahmed (54), there was little resistance to the England attack in the followon. Pakistan, already weakened by injuries, had a further setback when Javed Burki, the captain, hurt his right knee after being struck by Statham. In each innings he had to. be helped off the field, and though returning pluekily, was out immediately both times. Pakistan lost aM chances of making a fi?ht when its first innings collapsed before lunch. Hanif Moltammad was bowled early on by Statham, and Burki retired hurt for the first time Six Dramatic Minutes Then in six dramatic minutes Pakistan hurtled towards defeat. Cowdrey brought on offspinner F. Titrnus. and Nasim cut his first ball to Graveney in the covers. At the other end Miuhtaq was dismissed by Dexter, who then ran through the tall-enders to finish with four for 10 in 55 balls. Pakistan fared little better in its second innings. Ijiz Butt. Naslm and Musntaq were out with only 57 scored. Once Alim went the end was In sight, and the Innings closed eight minutes from the scheduled finish. Scores:— ENGLAND First Innings M.
