Stablemates Pay £6l8 In Washdyke Double

Saturday was one of the big days in the lives of the Washdyke trainer, E. J. Ellis, and the Riccarton horseman, D. N. Hadfield. Ellis saddled John Jameson and Orderly to win a double worth £6lB 7s for £1 on the second day of the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s winter meeting. Hadfield rode both horses.

John Jameson’s victory in the H. H. Fraser Memorial Handicap was a fitting reward for some consistent toil this season. His last win was against the milers in the Seadown Handicap on his home course 12 months earlier. But his record in 14 starts since August included seven minor placings and four of those were fourths from his last five starts.

A five-year-old gelded son of Alonzo and Colaheen. John Jameson is raced by Messrs J. A. C. Bain and J. Foley He was the 4 3 favourite of 15 and paid £ll 3s and £3 7s 6d for win-aod-place. Orderly, which carries the colours of Mr and Mie E. J Richards, was a 50/1 shot for the Washdyke Intermediate Handicap, which he won comfortably from the topweight, Captain Morgan. This was Orderly's first show of form since the soring, when he beat the staying hacks at Ashburton, but meantime he has not been raced as extensively as his s’ablemate. He is a six-year-old gelding by King's Com-' mand from Density. Ellis and Hadfield went close to completing a hattr ck for the day. The other stable runner was Opportunity. which finished second to For Sure in the Juvenile Handicap. The day was a sorry one for most betters. It began with Star Maiden returning a win dividend of £59 17s in the Opihi Maiden Stakes Six of the other seven winners on the programme were all at double-figure odds The biggest dividend for a place was Underwood Lass's <£44 18s 6d for third in the Opihi Maiden Stakes).

The double dividend was shared by the holders of 149 5s tickets. Only 17 were held on the course. The meeting was held in fine weather, but the track was soft and inclined to be PUggy. FIRST LEG The three major placegetters in the H. H. Fraser Memorial Handicap all came from well back in the field in the last half-mile and John Jameson ran out an easy winner from Strategy and White Skies. White Skies was last of 15 as the field left the stalls arjd Strategy and Rhythm Rein were just ahead of him John Jameson was in the bunch just ahead of these three. Omaha was the first to break the line, but after a furlong or so she was eased into the trailing position when FLaxman went ahead The others closest to the lead passing the five were Sudd el Nil, Francisco, Matlock, Navarone, Supreme Effort, and Melodic. John Jameson was alongside Rhythm Rein then and had only Strategy and Jesse Owens behind him. White Skies was two places ahead of John Jameson. Francisco joined Flaxman in front as they ran to the straight and Omaha. Sudd el Nil, Navarone. and Supreme Effort comprised the bunch close behind them. John Jameson cleared the ruck with a powerful run outside the furlong He gathered in Sudd el Nil and Supreme Effort in a few strides and galloped beyond challenging range. Strategy’s brilliant finish was one of the minor features of the race. He was much too late to peg back the winner, but outfinished

■White Skies for second by a length, and ran John Jameson to three-parts of a length. Melodic held his place from the furlong for fourth half a heed back. Then there was a neck to Supreme Effort, half a length to Jesse Owens, and a head to Rhythm Rein. The favourite. Omaha, was tenth and the second choice, Francisco, followed her home Both weakened badly in the straight. AT LONG ODDS Orderly continued the run of long-shot winners when he outstayed the top-weight Captain Morgan, to win the Washdyke Intermediate Handicap, the second leg of the double. Orderly, the 15/14 favourite of 15, paid £5l 5s and £lO 10s for a win-and-place. D N. Hadfield had Orderly well placed on the outer of Magic Casement behind the pacemaker, Elrick, till the half-mile. A furlong later he was upsides with Elrick and was clear into the straight. Captain Morgan carried the top-weight of 9-4 from fourth Into second place a furlong from the end and a game but unsuccessful challenge carried him to within half a length of Orderly. Alloa, fourth equal with Captain Morgan at the halfmile. but equal second on the home turn, battled on for third three-parts of a length back. She beat Munster King, which had his chance, by half a heed. Then there was half a length to the weakening Elrick, which was followed in by the favourite, Timna. He was at the height of a big run from the rear when he had to be checked near the furlong as Brian Warwick buckled over with a fractured leg.
