The New Zealand-bred Contador. starting favourite at 7/2. gave a brilliant exhibition to win the Grand National Hurdle at Flemington yesterday. Contadors time of 5:25'i was a race record. It was two and a half seconds less than Cheery Jack's record set in 1940. and two and a quarter seconds less than Kevastar’s Flemington record (1940),

Contador scored by half a furlong from Red Braid, with Tod Star four length* away third. Contador was ridden by the 20-year-old apprentice. R. Afflick. who was having hl* first ride In a national.

Earlier in th* day the stewards announced that Carey Light, the overnight favourite, had been withdrawn on veterinary advice. Carey Light apparently struck himself while galloping at Mentone yesterday morning. Result:—

Summer Sea Succeeds (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY. July 8. The New Zealand mare Summer Sea scored her first win in Australia in the Welter Handicap at Rosehill yesterday. Summer Sea, 12/1, scored by a length and a quarter from another New Zealander, Want. Golden Seaman was a long neck away third. It was Summer Sea's second start in Australia. She had finished seventh to Atlantic Silver in the Warwick Farm Leppington Handicap on June 30 at her other start.
