Badminton N.Z. Champion Wins N.I. Title
(N Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NTH., July 8. D. B. Higgins, of Wellington, added the North Island men's badminton title to his New Zealand championship when he defeated L. Bristol, of Manawatu, 11-15. 15-1. 17-14, at Feilding on Saturday.
In the final of the women’s singles. Miss G. Tompkins, of Wellington. the top-seeded player, took the North Island title from Miss B. Dent, of Taranaki, winning 11-5. 11-6.
COAST BEATS S. CANTERBURY
First Success Since 1955 In a representative badminton content in Greymouth on Saturday night. West Coast beat South Canterbury by 13 matches to 3. This was the first occasion upon which West Coast had beaten its opponents since 1955. West Coast was generally expected to be strong in the men's section, but the women created a surprise by winning three of their singles matches The home team's three losses were in the women's doubles and one of the slaries. The following were the results. West Coast players being mentioned first: — Men's Singles.—O. Harrison beat R. Shrimpton. 15-7. 15-8; G. Bone beat J. Chester. 15-10, 15.13. P Coll beat J. Rouse. 15-1. 15-4; J Rubbo beat H Cox. 15-6. 15-10. Women's Singles.—M:ss J Baird beat Mrs G. Adams, 11-5. 12-10: Miss P Dobson beat Miss J Beck. 11-0. 10-12. 11-7; Miss B Lvivam beat Miss M. Patterson. 11-1. 11-5; Miss L. Brown lost to Miss D. Souter. 0-11. 4-11. Men's Doubles Harrison and Cod beat Shr.mpton and Chester. 15-1. 15-6: Bone and Rubbo beat Rouse and Cox. 15-11 15-4. Women's Doubles M sses Baird and Dobson lost to Mrs Adams and Miss Beck. 12-15. 15-8: 8-15: Misses Lynam and Brown lost to M sses Patterson and Souter. 14-18. 6-15. Mixed Doubles Harrison and Miss Lynam beat Shrimpton and Mrs Adams. 15-5, 15-12: Bone and Miss Baird beat Chester and Mias Sootier. 15-2. 15-4: Coll and Miss Brown beat Rouse and Miss Beck. 15-5. 5-15. 15-5; Rubbo and Miss Dobson beat Cox and Miss Patterson 15-12, 15-5.
Ovation for Ballet.— The Bolshoi Ballet Company, making its first appearance on an Australian tour, received a 15 minute ovation at the end of its programme last night—Perth. July 7.
