Mead Man To Plough In National Final

The latest ploughman to qualify for the New Zealand ploughing championships at Invercargill later this month Is J. W. .Breading, aged 28. who farms in partnership with his brother, L. A. Breading, at Mead. J. W. Breadtoj won the qualifying round for the New Zealand championship held in conjunction with the Rakaia Ploughing Match Association's twentyninth match at Rokeby, near Rakaia, on Saturday. Breading was taking part in his fifth qualifying round this season, having in his four previous attempts ended in second place on each occasion. A ploughing match competitor for about five years. Carter, of Greenpark, who was one of the judges of the class for ploughmen who bad already qualified, said that the standard generally was a little disappointing. All the competitors made mistakes. One of the three judges for the qualifying event, Mr A L Coleman, of Lincoln, said that the winner’s work compared very favourably with that done in the special event, but outside the top two ploughmen the standard tended to tail off a little In other events one of the most successful ploughmen was A R Johnston, of Rakaia. who won the title of champion ploughman. The match was held in beautifully sunny but cool conditions, with the snowcovered mountains as a backdrop. The attendance was described as bigger than in recent years. Placings were:
