10-3 WIN TO B.H.S.

St. Andrew’s Late Bid

Christchurch Boys' High School and St. Andrew’s Collage were fairly well matched forward, in their annual fixture at St. Andrew's on Saturday. but the Boys' High School backs were much sharper and were decisive in a 10-3 win. Boys' High School scored a try hear the end of the first half and another soon after the resumption, each converted; St. Andrew's scored, a try near the end of the match.

The teams were:— Christchurch Boys’ High School.—W. B. Barbarel; G. McClatchy, G. Gainsford. K. Anderson; M. Brown. T. Mehrtens; R. Marks: L- McIntosh: K. Hill (captain). K Tracker, P. England, D. Smeaton; W. R. Harrison. R. Wright. M, Collins.

St. Andrew’s College.—G. D. Stone; J. G. Sutherland. R. Caird. P. Sturge; D. Farnsworth. G. Walkinshaw; M B. Maxwell; P. Taylor; S. J. Fox, C. Ensor. R. Mars (captain), C. Turner; M. H. Anderson, A. Young, G. I. T. Evans. Unlike the previous week when it lost to Shirley. 3-11. St. Andrew's held a territorial advantage. The hefty, shouldering Anderson, Young and Mars played well, although, apart from Turner they were not quick enough to the loose ball. Taylor jumped well in the lineouts, but the backs could make nothing of this advantage which existed for a large part of the first half. The ball went out the chain several times but usually finished in touch. Farnsworth and Walkinshaw made one or two breaks but there was a general lack of penetration. Like the previous week. St. Andrew's, with a considerable deficit, played its best Rugby towards the end in a desperate attempt to save the game when it was too late. On the other hand. Boys’ High School had its periods on defence, especially in the first half, but occasionally swept the field and always looked a threat in the St. Andrews twenty-five. Quite the best back of the match was the first fiveeighths. Mehrtens. who made some superb breaks down the middle of the field. Gainsford and McClatchy were formidable three-quarters. McClatchy scoring a glorious try after a long, swerving run, and Barbarel was a sound full-back although he missed the line a few times early. . Boys' High School also had the outstanding loose forward of the match. D. Smeaton. He was exceedingly quick to the ball and linked well with his backs. W. Harrison and K. Hill were very competent forwards. Wright 'and McClatchy scored tries for Boys’ High School and Barbarel converted them. Sturge scored for St. Andrew’s. Mr R. W. Phizacklea was the referee. Christchurch Boys’ High School beat St. Andrew’s ColI lege, 3-0. in a match between second fifteens.
