Corduroy Shapes Well In Trial

Corduroy, which seems to have benefited considerably from his race at Ashburton last month, showed that he will be a prospect for the second leg of the double at Washdyke tomorrow when he rounded off his preparation for the second day of the South Canterbury meeting with a sound gallop with Bodkin and Navarone on the No. 6 grass at Riccarton yesterday.

Corduroy (C. T. Wilson) gave Bodkin (R. W. Donovan) and Navarone (R. B. Taggat) a short start into the last three furlongs of six, but was abreast of his companions and travelling well at the finish. Their time of Imin 25 4-ssec for the distance. the last three in. 42 2-ssec, was the best of the morning on a track which was cutting out rather badly and not conducive to fast times. Anything approaching 14sec to the furlong in the going could be considered a good gallop. . Corduroy and Bodkin will be rivals' in the Washdyke | Intermediate Handicap while ■Navarone is a light-weight I in the H H. Fraser Memorial ; Handicap, the first leg of the I double. I Omaha and Timna. which i might form the popular combination for tomorrow's double, recorded Imin 26 1-5 j sec for their six furlongs, but made slightly better time than Corduroy over the last three furlongs in 42sec Omaha was ridden by her race jockey. A. J. Stokes, and Timna by M. J. Wildermoth. Stokes has the mount on both horses tomorrow Thumper's exhibition of jumping was much more impressive than either that of Search Warrant or Knight in their solo schooling runs ; over the standard hurdles. ’ These three are rivals in the i Kerrytown Hack Hurdles at i Washdyke. i Thumper <T. W. Wilson) ■ cleared five fences at a good i pace and his exhibition was i faultless. Search Warrant (E. B Skelton) and Knight <T. W. Wilson) ; were both sent over a round of I four fences and for each their first jump was the worst. But ! their leaping improved as thev gathered more speed and warmed to the task and thev both managed the remaining fences without making mistakes Other gallops on the flat were Six furlongs;—

Tremble (A. J. Stokes). Reclaim (M. J. Skelton) and Ham (R. Thompson) abreast in Imin 26 4-ssec. the last three in 41 2-ssec. Tremble gave her companions a start of two lengtlis into the straight. ,„ Tt^ sa .e n ,W ' 2 ecky - a len^h to Wellington )G. R. Baldwin) and On The Way (B. W McDonald) in Imin 27 2-ssec the final three in 42 4-jaec Packwood (R. L. Browning)
