The Australian dairy industry would lose its protection in a full-scale economic integration with New Zealand but changes could be effected gradually to lessen the impact says the Australia and New Zealand bank quarterly survey in an article on economic union between Australia and New Zealand. "Some individual manufacturing industries in either country may suffer a setback and would ' need to improve, efficiency to remain in operation. Concern with this factor seems to be greater in New Zealand but there are reasons to believe that the extent of the problem may on closer examination prove to be much smaller than commonly thought. “Any decision to form a customs union between Australia and New Zealand must ultimately be made for political reasons, for, the economic factors can never be precisely evaluated, and non-eco-nomic issues must be taken into account. The several attractive economic advantages to both countries which could result from a union, at the cost of having to make some adjustments in the present economic structures over a reasonable period, justify full investigation and widespread discussion of the subject,” the article says.
