EMERGENCY IN CANADA
Extra Duty On N.Z. Exports (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 3. Immediate steps were being taken by the Government to ensure a minimum disruption to export trade as a result of Canada’s emergency’ financial measures, the Minister of Overseas Trade (Mr Marshall) said today. New Zealand had many items, notably meat, on which Canada h«fd imposed special import dutjes. he said.
“In each case an additional duty of 5 per cent, ad valorem has been levied as from June 25,” Mr Marshall said. “This applies to all countries"
He said full information had not yet been received from Canada, but it was known the special duties were introduced for balance-of-pay-ments reasons and would later be the subject of consultations in G.A.T.T. where they would have to be justified.
“Canada has commitments to New Zealand under the Canada-New Zealand trade agreement regarding the level of duties on most of the items where we are affected." he said. “But the agreement does not contain a provision which enables both countries to impose special taxes or duties in an emergency.”
