RACE CAREERS (1) Riccarton Yearlings Being Prepared

The parades at the Grand National meeting next month will mark the introduction to racing under race-day conditions for a number of next season’s two-year-olds. But these will probably represent only a small proportion of the 43 yearlings at present being educated for racing careers in Riccarton stables. The trend by buyers and breeders alike this year seems to have favoured youngsters which will eventually develop worth-while staying form. Many of these have already been broken in and turned out to develop. Others, which are still in work, are unlikely to begin their race careers until later next season. However, there will still be a handy number of wellbred and attractive youngsters to represent the district in early two-year-old races.

All but three of the 15 yearlings to come to Riccarton from the National Yearling Sales at Trentham in January are in steady work. It is almost certain that some of these quality youngsters will be ready to race in the spring. J. R. Shaw, private trainer to Mr W. H. Williamson, has the biggest team of young horses in work. The four yearlings be has on the active list include Boundless. a brother to the brilliant sprinter Cadiz, which was purchased privately by Mr Williamson after failing to reach his reserve of 5000gns at the National Yearling Sales. Another is Royal Mile, a sister to Diamond Head, for which Mr Williamson paid 625gns. Both these youngsters will carry Mrs Williamson’s colours.

Another four-figure purchase at the sales was a Baltoch—Estimate colt which will carry the colours of his Riccarton trainer C. C. McCarthy. This well-grown youngster, the second foal of his dam. cost 1300gns. In this, the first of two articles on the Riccarton yearlings, trainers are listed alphabetically from B to M inclusive. G. 8. Barr Pictavia—Natella filly; G. S Barr. Count Rendered—lrish Talent colt; R. McKay and E. Tanner. The Pictavia filly was bred by her owner. Her dam is a daughter of Duccio and Angeline (by Foxbridge). This youngster is at present being broken in but might not be ready for early spring racing. The Count Rendered colt is a brother to On Account and is from the same family as Grey Boots and Howe. He was bred at the Baicarre% Stud, Matamata, by Mr J. H? Lindsay. J. L. Barr Fair’s Fair—Bonny Loch filly; D W J. Gould. Roi Cheval—Fairy Flight gelding; W. R. Woodham. Red Marlin—Schiaparelli; D. McKenzie. Llanstephan—Zifin Ways filly; W R. Lemon. Magic Carpet—Highness; G. A. Hutton.

The Fair’s Fair filly, which has been named Katrine, is a first foal. Her dam. Bonny Loch (by Balloch) is a sister to Princess Loch, a winner of the WR.C. Desert Gold Stakes and runner-up in the N.Z. Oaks, and Belle Lock, which to Fair’s Fair left the very good handicap horse Commodore Roberts. This youngster, for which Mr Gould pain 300 guineas at the yearling sales, is closely related to Defaulter, champion racehorse and sire. The Rio Cheval gelding, which waa bred by Mr G. L. Templeton. Ashburton, is a brother to the open sprinter, Le Cheval. He has been broken in and turned out to develop. The Red Marlin filly, which was bred by her owner, has also been turned out after being broken in. Her dam, Schiaparelli, which was purchased by Mr McKenzie at the dispersal sale of Mr W E Haslett’s stock, is a half-sister, by Lo Zingaro, to the Grand

(National Steeplechase winner, Capet. The Llanstephan filly was bred by her owner. Her dam. Elfin Ways, is a half-sister to On The Way. She has also been turned out after being broken in. The Magic Carpet filly, which has also been broken in and turned out, was bred by her owner. Her dam. Highness, a daughter of Royal Chief and Revelry, was bred by Mrs H. D. Greenwood. W. N. 8. and R. J. Barr Clarification—Hineroto colt; L. Franklin. This colt, which was purchased by Mr Franklin for 400 guineas at the yearling sales, is a half-brother to the winners Roto Ra, Stowell, Dolores, Surhine, Reshine, and Insurgent. His dem Hineroto is a sister to Sleepy Lagoon, unraced dam of Drowsing, winner of six races including the Alison and Paeroa Cups. Most of this family have done well as two-year-olds. A. S. Ellis Pictavia—Finlr gelding: R. W. McCaffery Dogger Bank—Lucky Time filly; L. H. Power. The Pictavia gelding is the second live foal of his dam, a daughter of Finis and Salutation. He was bred by Mr L. C. Warren, at Prebbleton. Lucky Time, the dam of the Dogger Bank filly, was a winner. This youngster, which was bred by her owner, is on the smallish side and will be put aside to develop after her initial education is completed

C. G. Humphries Dogger Bank—Rise and Shine gelding; P. D, Hall. Summertime—Countess Selina gelding; V. G. Bond. Rise and Shine, the dam of the Dogger Bank gelding, compiled an outstanding sprint record in Mr Hall’s colours some seasons back She was a daughter of Sun King and Golden Legend, a half-sister by Gold Nib to the good gallopers Te Kooti and Folkestone. This yearling was bred by his owner. The Summertime gelding was purchased for 900 guineas by Mr Bond at the yearling sales. He is closely related to the smart two-year-old winner, Eastern Song, and is from the same family as the Wanganui Cup winner. Dynasty. P. H. Jones Oman—Marie filly; P. H. Jones. Bal loch—Belle Nuit colt; O. F. S. Martini. Oman—Brolefort Melody filly; Mrs P. H. Jones and T. N. Syme. Jekyll—Limmat filly; Mrs P. H. Jones and T. N. Syme. Red Mara—Peel Tower colt; M. C. Watson. Dogger Bank—Mural colt; FJ. Thwaltes. The Oman —Marie filly, which was bred by Messrs Meier Bros, at the Santis Lodge Stud, Matangi, is a sister to the good handicap horse. Drumawhey, and to Donna Paola, winner of six races of which four were as a two-year-old. Marie, which was lightly raced, is a sister to Livorno, winner of 10 races in Australia. This youngster is being prepared for early two-year-old races. The Balloch colt is the second foal of his dam. He is closely related to the good middle distance performers. Golden Luca and Sporting Ken. This youngster has been broken-in and turned out The Oman—Broiefort Melody filly and the Jekyll—Limmat filly are closely related. Broiefort Melody is the dam of Limmat and the good class open gallopers, Melody Man and Omaha. Both these youngsters.

which were bred at the Santis Lodge Stud, have been broken in and turned out to develop. Peel Tower, the dam of the Red Mars colt, is a half-sister by Irish Lancer to the N.Z. Cup winner Jamell. This youngster is a half-brother to Royal Tower, winner of 10} races including the DJ.C. James Hazlett Gold Cup. Palantua, the colt’s grandam, won 12 races including the N.Z. Cup. Mr Watson paid 350 guineas for him at the yearling sales. He was not expected to make an early two-year-old and was turned out after being broken in. The Dogger Bank colt was bred by his owner. He is the third foal of Mural, a daughter of Royal Arch and Brigg Fair, bred by Mr W. E. Hazlett. This well-grown youngster was not expected to develop early speed and was turned out after being broken in. D. M. Kerr Chatsworth—Surprise Ending filly; D. M. Kerr. This filly, which was bred by her owner, is a half-sister to this season’s Welcome Stakes winner, Seaend, and to Surrend. Her dam. Surprise Ending. was a very good staying mare whose winning record included the N.Z. St. Leger Stakes at Trentham. If she progresses satisfactorily, this filly will make her race debut in the spring. C. C. McCarthy Balloch—Estimate colt; C. C. McCarthy. Chatsworth—-Panda colt; E. Rutherford. Estimate, the dam of the Balloch colt, was rated top filly in the Two-year-old Free Handicap for the 1954-55 season. Her wins included the Great Northern Champagne Stakes and a division of the Welcome Stakes. At three she was successful in the Avondale Guineas. This youngster, her second foal, is a half-brother to Bronze Eagle, winner of a division of the £lO5O A.J.C. Juvenile Handicap. Bred at Sir James and J. C. Fletcher’s Alton Lodge Stud, at Te Kauwhata, he cost 1300 guineas at the yearling sales. The Chatsworth colt was bred by his owner. He is a nuggety type, which suggests early soeed. His dam is a daughter of Timanova and Koala (by Ringmaster).

I. McClure Jekyll—Anne March gelding; Gilbert Grigg. This youngster, a half-brother to the wipner CaAibrae, Is out of an unraced sister to Quick March, whose wins included the W.R.C. Summer Handicap (l}m). He is also closely related to the good stayer, Straight Lead, whose record included a second in the Auckland Cup. He was purchased privately by Mr Grigg after being passed in at 350 guineas at the yearling sates. Although in work he is a well-grown youngster which will probably take time and Is unlikely to make his racing debut until later next season. He has been named Disguised. G. H. Murfitt, Jun. Pictavia—Sun House gelding; G. H. and Mrs Murfitt, Jun. Dogger Bank—Lady Goldwyn J elding; G. H and Mrs Murfitt, un. Dogger Bank—Smuggles filly; G. H. and Mrs Murfitt, jun. Dogger Bank—Queen Simper filly. J. Lockett. The Pictavia gelding, which was bred by his owners, is a three-quarter brother to the Victoria Oaks winner, Innesfell. He has been broken in and turned out. Lady Goldwyn, the dam of

the Dogger Bank gelding, is a half-sister. by Gold Nib, to Balmacarra. a top-flight performer in the north some seasons back. This youngster has been broken in and turned out. Smuggles, the dam of the Dogger Bank Ally, was a winner in Mr and Mrs Murfltt, jun.’s colours. She is by Treasure Hunt from Tan Lady (by Nightmarch). This filly, and the Pictavia and Dogger Bank geldings. were all bred by Mr and Mrs Murfltt, Jun. A start has yet to be made on the education of the Dogger Bank—Queen Simper Ally
