J. Williams Runs Well

A former New Zealand junior harrier champion, J. Williams, showed in the Christchurch club championships last Saturday that he has recovered well from having a cartilege removed from a knee during the early part of the last track season. In one of the closest contests for the club title, Williams was relegated to second by J. Power after having set the pace for most of the six miles and a quarter.

It was an interesting tactical race, in which Williams led N. Chandler with a break of about 40 yards to N. Fleming and W K. Kennedy, and a further break to Power and W. R. Green. Power made his bid about the beginning of the last of the three laps and gradually closed on the leaders. Little more than a minute covered the first six placings.

Provided Williams has no further set-backs, he will prove a valuable addition to harrier strength in the province. to which he has returned after nearly two seasons in Nelson, where he has been coached by his’ older brother, Kerry, a former junior and senior national champion. After having had some bad luck with injuries in the last season or two, Kerry Williams has been showing a welcome return to his old form with several wins in major inter-club events in Wellington.
