ADDINGTON MARKET Fat Cattle Hold Values; Sound Lamb Sale

Last week’s sharply dearer prices tar fat cattle were fully maintained at Addington Market yesterday. The entry, of 273, was again light.

Good-quality fat lambs sold soundly, the best gaining slightly. Butchers* ewes recovered by about 3s a head, but values were generally weaker for fat wethers. In a small store sheep section all classes were in demand, and prices for good-quality lambs again rose slightly.

STORE SHEEP The store sheep entry was bigger, and all classes met a sound sale, the best of the lambs tending to show a further slight improvement. The good demand reflected the favourable conditions and the ample feed supplies in the province. The entry totalled 2121 head, compared with 1487 last week, and included 1034 store lambs (747 last week), 292 two-tooth ewes (27), 573 older ewes (870), and 223 wethers (43). The store lamb entry included a number of pens of wether lambs in forward condition, and these were keenly sought by the moderate gallery following the sale, and prices looked to be slightly dearer. Good quality Romney wether lambs in the wool made 45s to 49s with others at 36s to 425. Good fine wools made 42s to 49s with others at 38s. Shorn Romney wether lambs ranged from 40s to 48s 6d for the best, with the best of the fine wools at 40s 6d to 425. Average to good Down cross made 36s 6d 39s and other shorn lambs ranged from 25s fid to 365. A. J. Duncan (Sheffield) sold halfbred wether lambs at 49s and G. W. Wright (Glentunnel) received the same price for Romneys. Waghorn Bros. (Little Akaloa) sold shorn Romney wether lambs at 48s fid. Two pens of good quality ewe lambs met a sound sale, an undisclosed vendor sold Romneys at 52s 6d. and R. J. Sloss (Domett) received 31s for 44 Corriedales. Sales Included:— Pyne, Gould. These sold keenly at 72s to 83s, with 62 at the top figure. They were sold by the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association. Ltd. A pen of small, unmated fine-wools made 35s 6d. OLDER EWES Quality in the older ewe offering was average to good, and prices were fully on a par. with recent rates. Good Romneys made from 44s to 455, which was paid for a line of 113 from I. C. Graham (Summerhill). Good, fine wools made from 40s to 46s 6d, which was paid for 91 mated Corriedales from D. D. MeGlffert (Cheviot), and a pen of mated Cheviot cross from R. L. A. FAT LAMBS Fat lambs met another good, sound sale, and better quality sorts tended to be dearer. The entry totalled 2118, compared with 1677 last week. The sale opened on a strong note, and this was maintained until the end, when there was a slight weakening. The main demand was for medium to heavy lambs and the smaller and plainer sorts did not sell so keenly. Top price of 80s Id was gained by F. B. Magson (Rakaia) with four ana the estate G. A. Mcßean (Springston) with seven. Mrs I. Boyd (Kaikoura) sold one at 76s Id, and Mrs R. Rolli t (Brookside) had a sale at 74s Id. and J. R. Bruce (Pendarves; sold 12 at 72s Id. FAT SHEEP While ewes met a firm sale which recovered the recent drop of about 3s a head wethers met a slack sale and most classes were weaker. The fat sheep entry totalled 3854 head compared with 3211 last week. Only the best of the mediumweight younger wethers were saleable at close to late rates and there was a marked discount on overfat, unfinished and older sheep. Wholesale and works competition was limited and the trade demand seemed to be less. This possibly reflected the bigger supply of heavy fat lambs. Most wethers were 2s to 3s a head cheaper. Good quality ewes sold soundly and tire best cutting lines firmed by fully 3s and. in cases, more a head. Quality of the ewes looked to be better and a bigger proportion of sheep sold in the top bracket. Top price for wethers of 71s Id was shared by R. J. Sloss (Domett) with five and A. J. Morris (Rakaia), with eight. L. Larsen (Swannanoa) sold a pen at 69s Id. Top price of 48s Id for ewes was paid to H. W. Farquhar (Culverden), and an unnamed vendor had a sale at 465.
