DAMAGES OF £5520

Man’s Fall Off Scaffolding (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. July 3. Damages of £5520 were awarded by a jury in the Supreme Court tonight to the widow of a workman who died as the result of a fall from scaffolding. The plaintiff, Shirley Vivienne Poole, of Lower Hutt, had claimed £ll.OOO damages and special damages of £65 on behalf of herself and her three children. The first defendant was Crittall Metal Windows (N.Z.), Ltd., Wellington, and the second defendant. Safeway Scaffolding, Ltd., scaffolding erectors. Wellington. Damages of £9200 were awarded by the jury and reduced by 40 per cent, for contributory negligence. The jury assessed 70 per cent, of the damages should be paid by the first defendant and 30 per cent, by the second defendant. The Chief Justice, Sir Harold Barrowclough, reserved the matter for further consideration. Poole fell from scaffolding at the ninth floor of the Inland Revenue building and suffered injuries from which he died on November 21.
