ORCHESTRAL MUSICIANS

Strike Call In London (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) LONDON. July 2. The central London branch of the Musicians’ Union today called for a strike by all symphony orchestral musicians in London from September.

Some of Britain’s most famous orchestras would be affected, including the London Symphony, London Phiiharmonic, Royal Philharmonic and Philharmonia Orchestras. An emergency resolution adopted by the branch’s monthly meeting acclaimed yesterday’s action by the union’s provincial and Scottish members, who gave three months’ notice to end their employment because of dissatisfaction over salaries and working conditions. It pledged support for any action the union’s executive committee might take affecting London members. The union’s general secretary, Mr Hardie Ratcliffe, said tonight that it was “practically certain” the executive committee would order London members not to accept engagements for performances after September.
