RUTHERFORD HALL
Joint Appeal By Churches
An appeal has been launched for the building of Rutherford Hall, a projected residential hall for students at the University of Canterbury which will be established and controlled by the Methodist and the Presbyterian Churches. The project will cost about £200.000. It is expected that £ 100,000 will have to be raised in addition to a Government subsidy, the amount of which has not been decided. The hall is designed initially to accommodate 75 men and 75 women. It will be open to students of all nationalities and religious afSliations. , The University Council nas offered a site at Ham and Mr Paul Pascoe, a Christchurch architect, has drawn a sketch plan, providing for two wings containing students’ rooms, a centrad block containing dining room, common rooms, and library, and a warden's lodge and chapel. The hall is named after Lord Rutherford one of the most distinguished graduates of the university. The project was launched because of the increasing requirements to provide board and lodging for students, and because many students at present are living in undesirable conditions which an not conducive to study.
