MOTORISTS’ TAXATION

Review Urged By S.I.M.U.

The emergency taxes on petrol and cars should be reviewed by the Government after the half-yearly accounts had been received in September, it was agreed by a meeting of the executive committee of the South Island Motor Union yesterday.

The taxation on motorists had made it possible for tax concessions to be made in other directions, said Mr T. E. V. Turpin (Otago).

The £l4 million in concessions in the recent Budget meant the motorist contributed 7s 2d in every £ of those concessions, Mr Turpin said. He realised it was difficult for the Government to estimate in June exactly the amount of taxation it was going to receive in the coming financial year, but the trend should be fairly obvious after the receipt of tlie half-yearly accounts in September. Mr Turpin moved that the joint standing committee of lhe S.I.M.U. and the N.1.M.U., after the receipt by the Government of the half-yearly accounts, should urge the Minister of Finance (Mr Lake) to abolish the emergency taxes on cars and petrol.
