TEACHERS’ PAY DELAYS

Remedy In New Computer The Education Department cannot promise completely satisfactory arrangements for payments of teachers until its new computer is installed, probably next month, according to a letter received by the Christchurch Postprimary Schools' Council. A complaint that pay sheets had arrived late and that a member of its staff had to work through Easter to ensure that teachers received their cheques on time was made by the council two months ago. The department said this complaint, and others, prompted the present letter to all educational bodies. Problems could all be traced back to the inadequacy of the present equipment and the coincidence this year of some major pay adjustments, the department said. In the opening pay period of the year there was always a host of changes through new appointments in schools. Then the ruling rate survey increases had to be implemented, and also the decision on equal pay for women. All these loads fell on a depleted staff which was continuing to work very long hours. The secretary of the council (Mr P. J. Halligan) said the last pay lists arrived earlier than ever before.

Convict Killed.—A convict was killed and several injured in an attempted breakout by 200 inmates of a Dominican state prison. Twelve escaped to the surrounding hills, after breaking down gates and climbing a wire fence.—(Santo Domingo, June 26.)
