APPLICATION FOR CROSSING

Refusal Of Board’s Request

As there was a school crossing over Montreal street for the use of Christchurch Girls’ High School pupils, the City Council had adopted the recommendation of its traffic committee tthat the application for a crossing in Armagh street be declined, the board of governors was informed in a letter from the Town Clerk (Mr C. S. Bowie). The letter said that the council did not consider that a crossing from the main entrance of the school across Armagh street to Cranmer square, to permit a school patrol to operate when evacuation drill was carried out, would meet the situation, as it was considered that such a crossing would present more of a hazard than assistance if 700 pupils endeavoured to use it in the event of a fire.

There would be no objection to senior pupils acting as fire wardens during evacuation drill, and the traffic de. partment was fully prepared to assist, and in most cases would detail an officer to attend if given two days’ notice.
