HOSPITAL BLOCK

Approval For Auckland (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 26. Cabinet approval for preparation of working drawings for the first stage construction of the new £6.5 million acute block at Auckland Hospital was described as “a great step forward in hospital services of Auckland and New Zealand” by Mr T. H. C. Caughey, chairman of the Auckland Hospital Board today. The first stage, which will cost £3.59 million, will provide 320 beds out of 640 for the complete project. The new hospital will be built on the site of the present main building which was erected in 1875. “The new hospital will be one of the outstanding hospitals in the world,” said Mr Caughey. “The Government and the Health Department have been most co-operative over the scheme. We can now get ahead with completing the plans so that tenders can be called late next year.
